NOT A JOKE: INCLUDE TEACHING ABOUT ROMA AND SINTI GENOCIDE IN SCHOOLS
Over 500,000 Roma and Sinti people were murdered, tortured, starved, subjected to forced labour and medical experimentation under the Nazi regime – it is disgusting to make this the punchline of a joke.
In Jimmy Carr’s stand up special ‘His Dark Material’ he jokes that the genocide of Roma and Gypsies isn’t talked about, because no one wants to talk about the ‘positives’ of the Holocaust. The comment has received widespread criticism from Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people, politicians and human rights groups.
Public condemnation is important, but measures need to be implemented to create meaningful change. This incident has highlighted the pressing need to improve awareness of the genocide of Roma in the Holocaust. Education is key to understanding and celebrating cultural diversity and in challenging prejudice.
Join us today by asking your MP to call on the Secretary of State for Education and the Department of Education to take action to embed education about the mass murder of Roma and Sinti people, during the Holocaust, in the national curriculum.
